INTERVIEW
by nuestramontana.com
ARACELI SEGARRA :
Love for the mountains.

"... a retired on time, gives you, options to new trying"

One of the women that outstanding around the mountain world, is the spanish alpinist Araceli Segarra. Besides this love for mountains she dedicate her time to give conferences to professional fashion, etc...
The alpinist is a good example for women that practice this wonderfull sport, but she add in this interview : " I´m still learning a lot of thing"
In 1996 she became in the first spanish woman to get to the mount Everest summit, making an documental for national geographic about the arriving.
Although she doesn´t have plans to visit cordillera blanca, she is planing her next expedition to trango towers in Pakistan, near to " mountains of mountains", K2, where she had been twice.

Many times there are dangerous situations in mountains both technically and emotionally, during that moments have you think to get away from this sport?
How can your passion to get over this difficulty.
In fact, I lost the motivation to keep up climbing a consequence of an trouble in G1, that I had last year. Thank to this I though over about this and what I´ve been doing and why I´ve been doing. It was necessary to take my time to think seriously about my ideas, in my case I always had my own ideas firmaly which helped me to find my own way to continue. Take me away from famous mountains, crowded, porters.

Araceli, during her expedition to the north ridge of north side in k2

What is the most difficult thing in an expedition to a mountain the 8,000 ´s, the ascension. Or getting ready to go back home.
For me it is much work to prepare everything like sponsor although I can afford my expedition. being in the mountain or going back home don´t require too much efford. It´s somethings that it up to you.

Do you feel the same in andes or africa , himañaya, alps or every single one has a special meaning for you.
Every one has a special charm, colorful landscape, a light, a music, everything we can able to see through our senses, make different every journey. We can have memories in different way.

It is told a lot things about K2 some of then are real we know you are not superstitious, we were there twice how you do feel being in the mountain?
K2 in an great, majesty from any side you can see. I prefer to climb north side, it´s more difficult than the other one in this route you can go straigh to the top it´s something amazing.

In 1996 you got Everest summit Is there any reason that you could comeback there?
At the present, I am not interested in looking for a sponsor for this. I prefer to spend my money in something make me feel good, difficult or not but not in a crowded place.

Your experiencie in Fitz Roy made you to know some about a part of andes mountains. Cordillera blanca / huayhuash very difficult mountain and knowing around the world.
Are you planning to visit that places?
Well, they are not in my plans in this moment . But I would like to go in the near future.

You have become a well known climber since long time, you are a good example for those who practices climbing about all for women. How do you see the evolution of female alpinist. What will your advice be for those who wants start practicing this sport.
Well, I think female alpinist have evolutioned a little bit in the last age, most of women alpinist repeat always the same routes already opened but we don´t offer something different like Catherine Destivell, Alison Hargreaves or Seph Davis.
I don´t see myself giving advices, I think I´m still learning a lot of things.
a retired on time, gives you, options to new trying.

What do you do to avoid contaminating environment in the mountains
I try to take as a few stuff as I can this is one of the reasons I don´t hire porters, it means to take many stuff that it can stay there, climbing with few things contaminating less.

The alimentation has very to do in any activities as you do like swimming, climbing, ride horse or typing.
It dependents on your activities but in general a good diet is enough.
