Itinerary:
4 days / 3 nigthsThe trek passes through a handful of communities along this route from Olleros to Chavin, part of which traverses Huascaran National Park. Beginning in Olleros, , this trek is an ideal introduction to Andean culture, and also a perfect way to acclimatize for more extreme mountaineering and higher altitudes.
Day 1 .- The first day is an opportunity to explore the village of Olleros (3450 m.), experience mountain lifestyles, learn about traditional Andean crafts, and sample the local cuisine. The trail departing from Canrey Chico passes through a mostly flat grassland, extending south into surrounding landscapes of rolling hills sparsely populated with people and vegetation. After about four kilometers the perennially snow-capped Shaqsha (5,703 m) emerges from the north, yet soon vanishes from sight as the trail drops into the Uquian Valley. Few thatch huts comprise the dispersed settlement of Sacracancha (4,200 m. ) , camp.
Day 2 .- Ascent by a green valley to execellent place with view to Rurec mountain (5700 m.). This day will be short (4500 m.) We have time for visits 2 beautiful lakes to 1 hour to camp
Day 3 .- Ascent to Yanashayash pass (4750 m.) From there, we will make a desviation to up 2 hs. more reach the Azulcocha pass (4850 m.) with excellent view to Huantsan east face (6354 m.) and another mountains. Descent to next camp on the begin of quebrada Huantsan (4150 m.)
Day 4 .- From quebrada Huantsan, we descent for the beautiful valley above the Huachesca River is a lush, tropical mosaic in all shades of green. During harvest season, from June to September, the fields are ablaze with activity as the villagers cut and sheave the barley, corn and wheat growing in the lower altitudes along the road descending toward Chavín. The first small pueblo appearing on the trail's north side is Jato, the gateway to the Jato Valley. The trail then overlooks the tranquil hamlet of Chinchucancha, a village noted for its regionally anomalous architecture. Farther down the valley, the road traverses above the final narrow canyon of the Huachesca River. The trail bends to reveal the fabled "center of the universe", Chavin de Huantar. This monument is composed of impressive constructions of stone and enigmatic interior galleries. Its monoliths, ist nailed heads and its stone engravings demonstrate a pure and high esthetic technique. Upon leaving Chavin, the visitor is often accompanied by a complex sensation.
