Natural World Heritage Site Coiba Nacional Park
Coiba Island is the core of the huge Coiba National Park with 270,125 hectares; the park is Natural World Heritage Site since 2005. Most of the National Park is marine, approximately 216,500 hectares. The Island served as a penal colony from 1919 to 2001, surprisingly this lead to the well conservation of the rainforests on the Island, place of several endemic species and even Scarlet Macaws. The real treasures of Coiba you can observe underwater, it is the marine life that is spectacular, coral reefs with turtles, dolphins, big fishes, plenty of colourful fish etc.
Coiba is amazing marine life
Already in the boat from Santa Carolina to Coiba you can observe Marlins, Dolphins, Pelicans diving for fish or even humpback whales. Around Coiba you will find several coral reefs, one of these is the largest coral reef of the Central American Pacific Coast. Due to the coral reefs, the island has plenty of white beaches that appear as tranquil like a pool sometimes. Doing snorkelling in the turquoise waters e.g. at Granito de Oro you will be amazed by different species of coral and countless coral reef fish species.
